WHAT’S WITH THE SCOUT LINGO?
Does it ever feel sometimes though that Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA (for ages 11-17. Formerly known as Boy Scouts) have their own language? Are we a Pack or a Troop? What is a Den? How do Ranks work? When you first join scouting, it can be overwhelming but even taking a break over the summer some of these words can be out of ear shot and out of mind! So, one of our epic den Leaders for the Wolves, Luke Prettol, reminded me that a refresher of our Lingo is always a good idea: Thanks Luke and thank you for this list! SCOUT LINGO:

After seeing our Webelo 2’s crossover to the Troop it really reminded me our role as parents in the Pack.
My oldest became a Boy Scout and he went from needing me a ton to “I’m a man” mom and out on his own. During the Cub Scout years our kids need us. They need us to show them the way, set examples and have fun with them. The experiences they have with us during these (short) five years help set them up for independence, responsibility and grow confidence. While they are little now, it seems scary for us to let them go but with Cub Scouts we have a natural and slow progression (and sometimes it feels realllllly slow). This is good for all of us! When you walk with them through scouts you are doing more than you think. It’s why we say this is “Family Scouting” because you are actively participating and showing your child that the Cub Scout Values are values you endorse and know that your scout can grow into. Our Den leaders are epic but no one inspires your kiddo more than You! This is the most influential time in your child’s life and scouting is a great way to help you maximize it. Keep being awesome parents because you are doing Great! With Much Love! Jessica McCarty Pack 895, Committee Chair
I don’t want to brag… BUT Pack 895 has some of the best Adult Volunteers I’ve ever worked with and I’ve worked with tons of people over the years. They and you are vital to a smooth running, fun having, safe and excellent Cub Scout Pack. While we have many volunteers with titles, we have just as many who work behind the scenes creating projects, setting up events or even just running a station during a Pack Meeting. I am a big fan of people loving what they do so we ask what you like and what things you enjoy doing. Your hobbies may be a HUGE help to the Pack! When we find what you like and spread out the work it keeps everyone sane. If each Adult did just two things (small or big) for the Pack each year – we would have EVERYTHING taken care of. Two things seem like a drop in the bucket, but it helps more than you know. Contact me today to see what two things you can take off someone else’s plate to keep our Pack running epic-ly. (see, even someone to tell me that isn’t a word would be a huge help!)
Keep Being Awesome! Jessica McCarty Pack 895, Committee Chair Our Recharter is around the corner where we pay ahead for the next year of scouting (Jan - Dec). But what is included in that amount? For a full year Pack 895’s dues are $150. This includes: $72 for the BSA. This covers our insurance through that organization for each scout for whenever we do any event or outing. The other $78 goes straight to Pack 895 to pay for each achievement your child earns over the year as well as any trophies we need for our events. It also includes a $7 donation towards your den leaders and leadership team to pay half of their annual dues as a thank you for their hard work throughout the year. And that’s it! Half for BSA, half for your scouts patches/belt loops/achievements! We do get an extra incentive from the BSA when we turn in our recharter on time so get those Venmo payments ready: Your next year of Scouting Adventure awaits!! **Graduating Webelos pay a discounted rate since their Cub Scout Journey ends in February.
You can pay your dues by: 1) Venmo (@TxPack895) 2) Scoutbook (if you sold popcorn) 3) check / cash We’ll let you know when we are accepting dues for next year. So stay tuned. Keep being AWESOME!!! Jessica McCarty Pack 895, Committee Chair Youth Protection Training (YPT) is a 72 minute online course that discusses how we as adults can help protect all the youth and adults in our care from sexual predators, bullies and unsafe environments. This course is resumable for your convenience so it can be completed it in more than one sitting. This training is required of ALL Adult volunteers and needs to be renewed every two years. As a Pack we have made the decision that this training is so important that we would like ALL ADULTS in the pack to take it. It’s important for you to know what steps we are taking to make sure your family is safe as well as invite you to take those steps with us. Once you complete YPT you can email a copy to Carla or I. Carla Hinz for more information or if you have any questions. Please help us keep all in our care feel safe and secure and complete your YPT today! If you have further questions regarding YPT and it’s process, please contact our epic Pack Trainer, Carla Hinz.
Yours in Scouting, Jessica McCarty Pack 895, Committee Chair The Cub Scouts have two types of uniforms. Class A means full dress uniform, which includes: Blue Cub Scout Shirt (Brown for Webelos if they choose) with a rank neckerchief, rank slide, Cub Scout belt, and optional rank hat, as well as BSA shorts/pants or socks. You are welcome to use your own blue or brown shorts/pants to save some money. This uniform is worn for all Pack Meetings and other special events such as opening and closing of Pack 895 Campouts for the flag ceremonies. Class B uniforms are the official Pack 895 t-shirt. This is purchased (for $16) when you join Cub Scouts. Ask any adult leader how you can purchase one. This is worn for every other event: den meetings, outings, service projects, space derby, rain gutter regatta, etc. You will always be told which uniform to wear to our scouting events. Now you know what’s the difference between Class A & Class B. Yours in Scouting

DID YOU KNOW? (By Jessica McCarty, Pack 895, Committee Chair) This is the first Edition of Jessica's "Did You Know" featured in our first Scout Me Informed Newsletter. Sign up NOW to be included in our next Scout Me Informed. Cub Scouting is for Families. So many fun things are on the way for your scout and your entire family! One of my favorite things about Cub Scouting is that it is for the WHOLE family, which is great since I have four kiddos to join in the fun. Cub Scouts takes the whole family, creating adventures and experiences for them to bond and grow together. This is such a short time we get with our kiddos, so our desire in planning pack events is to both help each scout learn & grow and to create lasting memories for your entire family! Before you know it they will be going on to Boy Scouts, and that program will be much more scout led. Our events are intended to teach skills & principles to prepare them for independence while also enabling you to join in the fun. Be sure to put our entire new scout year of events into your calendar so you won’t miss out on a single adventure! Jessica McCarty Pack 895, Committee Chair |
